The Story Behind the Movement
Growing up, I used to stare up at the sky and wonder, “How high can a balloon float?” and “Is
there anything out there in the universe that can stop it or force it down?”
My parents didn’t just encourage us to ask questions like these—they inspired us to chase the
answers with everything we had. As one of seven children, I was raised in a household where
dreams were sacred. My parents poured belief into each of us, not just through words, but
through the way they lived. They taught us to live boldly, love deeply, and give generously.
Their legacy is my compass—and for that, I will always be grateful.
But as I grew older, I realized that not everyone values dreamers—especially if those dreamers
don’t look, sound, or conform to what society deems acceptable.
Straight out of college, I landed a position as an Asset Manager at a mid-sized real estate
investment firm. I was determined to rise, and I gave that job everything I had. I skipped lunches,
stayed late, and let my work speak for itself. Naturally, I thought my performance would be the
most important metric during my mid-year review.
I was wrong.
Despite glowing feedback about my performance, the conversation quickly shifted. My “fit” was
the issue. I didn’t blend in with my peers—mostly white, mostly male. It wasn’t my talent or
dedication that they questioned—it was my presence.
My mentor at the time pulled me aside. She gently explained that leadership felt it would be
more “comfortable” working with me if I wore darker suits instead of dresses. Apparently, being
polished, professional, and feminine was… distracting. In that moment, I realized that in their
world, excellence wasn’t enough. Conformity was the currency.
So, I adapted. I adjusted. I climbed.
Within two years, I became Director of Operations. But just as I was hitting my stride, life hit
back. A serious illness forced me to step away, and my family moved back to Dallas so I could
get the care I needed. Three years later, I was ready to re-enter the business world—and I hoped
things had changed.
They hadn’t.
But I had.
Instead of going back to corporate America, I pivoted. I entered politics for eight years. I built a
mortgage company. I dove into commercial real estate. I succeeded—on my own terms. Because
the little girl inside me still believed what my parents had always said: If you can dream it, you
can do it.
And then, it hit me:
Who decided other people get to write the rules of your life?
I say—write your own.
That belief became the foundation for my life’s work. And from it, I created Imaginary Glass
Ceiling—a movement, a message, and a mission to help others break through limitations that
were never theirs to carry in the first place.
